Heart-to-heart Interview: Camo Columbo

In the ever-evolving landscape of indie music, few artists manage to stand out with a sound as distinctive and captivating as Camo Columbo. With a seamless blend of genres and a fearless approach to experimentation, Camo has been steadily carving out a niche for himself. His journey from an MTV kid to a passionate and innovative musician is as inspiring as it is intriguing.

Read to believe.

What inspired you to pursue a career as an indie artist?

As a kid, I watched a lot of MTV, sang in the shower, and was happy as a dog when music was playing. At the age of 12, I started making music, it gave me such a great feeling that I never stopped.

I remember that, as a kid, I wanted to be a world explorer; somehow I see creating music as a big exploration, blending genres together and creating something out of just ideas and experimentation.

Who are your musical influences, both within and outside your genre?

I’d say Tom Misch, João Gilberto, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Eminem, Kanye West, and C.W. Stoneking. It’s such chaos and most of the artists have nothing to do with each other, but it somehow comes together in my brain.

Can you walk us through your recording and production process?

Yes definitely! Most of the time I start out with a simple guitar or piano part and record wordless random melodies with my voice, sometimes there’ll be some words hidden in the melody already. I’ll add some drums and a lot of percussion layers. Then I’ll delete everything and try something totally random using an old guitar idea I had 2 years ago and suddenly I feel a spark.

Whenever I start I can easily make the whole instrumental in no time. I’m experimenting lately with adding vocal ideas in Logic while creating, so the whole writing process isn’t separate. But most of the time I create a whole beat, and a few days later I start piling up ideas to eventually write and record my vocals. That part can be a slow process, with a lot of ups and downs but I learned last year to make decisions faster to just stick with the initial feelings and ideas I had. There can be another song made with the new ideas that will pop up in the process.

Is there a dream collaboration you would love to pursue in the future?

I’d love to make a tune with Tom Misch, FKJ, Laufey, and maye.

What advice would you give to aspiring indie artists who are just starting their musical journey?

Just experiment a lot to find your voice and spark. You can learn a lot on YouTube if you are stuck. Learn to ask the right questions at the right time and don’t overcomplicate the process, just have fun.
