If you’ve landed this post, chances are that you’re looking for a getaway this summer. Most importantly, it means that you’re into indie music and that’s right up our alley! These music festivals are a must whether you simply enjoy the overall experience or, especially, if you are a musician or band that needs a little bit of inspiration for your craft.

In this blog post, we’ve selected the best indie music festivals globally, based on reputation, genre variety, and the most essential criterion of them all: festivals that we would want to go to! Whether you’re going to be in the UK, Europe, or America during this summer of 2024, we’re certain that there’s at least one that you’ll be able to make it to.

Top Indie Music Festivals 2024 in Europe

Indie music is a genre characterized by its DIY approach, independent record labels, etc., you get the gist. It’s said that most indie artists originated in the UK and USA in the 1980s, although this is definitely debatable. What we do know is that, if you happen to be a musician and need a bit of inspiration -or simply have an amazing time- here’s a selection of indie music festivals you don’t want to miss this summer.

Northside Festival (Denmark)

If you want to experience first-hand one of the best indie music festivals in Denmark, you need to attend the three-day Northside Festival starting June 6th. Every year, renowned and emerging artists worldwide head out to Aarhus to expand festivalgoers’ musical taste.

This year the lineup sounds like something you won’t want to miss, including 070 Shake, Amyl and the Sniffers, Blanco White, Coi Leray, Jenny Beth, Massive Attack, Shame, The Smile, Veto, etc.

Melt! Festival (Germany)

Gear up on camping equipment if you want to experience one of the most unique festival surroundings so far. The venue is none other than Ferropolis, aka “the city of iron”. Imagine a museum of gigantic industrial machines (no joke, up to 30 meters high and 120 meters long) reverberating the sounds of the widest range of indie music.

From the 11th to the 13th of June, get ready to be inspired by Honey Dijon, Skepta, James Blake, Anotr, Slayyyter, Sugababes, Yaeji, etc.

Canela Party (Spain)

This annual music festival, this year between 21-24 of August, celebrates the best in indie music offering a diverse lineup of indie bands and artists from around the world, emerging and established indie icons, including Amigas Íntimas, Big Thief, Dame Area, Meeky, La Plata, Wednesday, etc.

There’s something for everyone at this festival, including F&B vendors, art installations, and other activities. Oh, and did we forget to mention that this four-day music feast takes place in the south of Spain? None other than the beachside city of Torremolinos.

You can see for yourself by viewing the Canela Party Aftermovie from 2023.

Top Indie Music Festivals 2024 in America

If we’re going to talk about indie music festivals in America, the term Coachella might be the first to pop up! Well, here are some of the best indie music festivals you can go to if you happen to be there, especially if you want to experience completely new and fresh sounds.

Sled Island (Canada)

Oh, Canada! This year the five-day music and arts festival will be bringing over 300 artists, comedians, and filmmakers to 30 venues spread out across Calgary, AB. You can bet that this is definitely more than a music festival, so if you’ve lost your muse or are facing that “musician’s block”, you’ll find inspiration here.

From 19-23 of June you’ll have the chance to experience talented bands such as Show Me the Body, who recently confirmed.

Outside Lands (San Francisco, CA)

The unique and delightful Golden Gate Park serves as the venue for a diverse array of performances between August 9-11 of 2024. Every year, it becomes a standout event in San Francisco’s summer calendar. Don’t miss the chance to explore Grass Lands, an expansive cannabis experience, making it one of the most significant curated offerings at any music festival.

As for this year’s line-up, you won’t be disappointed:

Summerfest (Milwaukee, WI)

Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest music festival globally, this lakeside event extends over an impressive three weekends, between June 20th and July 6th, captivating nearly a million attendees.

Along the shores of Lake Michigan in downtown Milwaukee, this expansive festival is not only a colossal musical gathering but also stands out as one of the most economically accessible summer music events where you can find talented lineups such as this year’s: Kane Brown, Mötley Crüe, Keith Urban, Ivan Cornejo, etc.

Top Indie Music Festivals 2024 in the UK

Ok. We’re going to mention the big giant elephant in the room, Glastonbury Festival, possibly one of the largest and most popular music festivals in the world. So, that’s why we assumed you’d know about it. Here 3 kick-ass festivals that you need to attend if you happen to be in the UK this summer.

Kendal Calling (Cumbria)

This is probably one of the favorite for festivalgoers during summer in the UK. Think about it, one of the most scenic and picturesque settings, Lake District, Cumbria. And it’s not just nature that’s an experience. This festival, to be held between August 1-4, 2024 also offers various experiences, from World Food to Ale Festival. Don’t believe us? Get the full overview of the Kendal Calling experience.

Last year, the lineup was a diverse experience including Annie Mac, beabadoobee, Kasabian, Royal Blood, Kaiser Chiefs, Rick Astley, The Lathums, and Example. Although the lineup’s still not confirmed, we feel it’s going to be just as unforgettable.

We Out Here (Wimborne St Giles)

If you’re going to be ‘out there’ between August 15-18, then you’ll be lucky enough to witness the swaggiest line-up of icons, including  Floating Points, Ebo Taylor & the Family Band, Sainté, aja monet, corto.alto, Strandz, Tara Clerkin Trio, Venna, Yaya Bey, to name a few.

That’s right, from soul to house, afro to electronica, hip hop to jazz, and everything in between. Like every year, We Out Here Festival also bets on a nature-based setting embraced in forests, woodlands, and a whole lot of F&B and artistic activities.

Lost Village (Lincolnshire)

It’s undeniable that there’s something about UK indie music festivals and woodlands. This time, Lincolnshire between August 22-25. What’s definitely promising about this Lost Village festival is the contrast between enjoying a worldly line-up in the most intimate setting: Ben Böhmer (Live), Ben Ufo, The Blessed Madonna, Bonobo (Dj), Braxe + Falcon, Carlita, Gilles Peterson, Habibi Funk, Hagop Tchaparian, He.She.They, Homoelectric, Honey Dijon, etc.

As you’ve already guessed, it’s not just music, there’s comedy, food, drinks, workshops, etc., all in line with the whole theme of the event. If you leave this Lost Village uninspired… go back in, that’s all we can say!

It’s no wonder that these festivals attract thousands of music lovers every year and offer a diverse lineup of indie, rock, electronic, and alternative music. They also provide a platform for new and emerging artists to showcase their talent and connect with fans and industry professionals.
